In most cases that means that you need to install a sound driver. Hold down the WINDOWS key and press PAUSE (BREAK) - that should bring up the System Properties, open the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.

Check for missing drivers (marked with question mark). If you are missing sound driver then you should try installing it from the CD that came with your computer or if you know the brand of your sound card you can try getting the latest drivers from the vendor's website.

In many cases downloading and installing the Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver will solve your problem. Go to this page, click the + sign net to Downloads to expand and find the Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver and download it.
